Overview: The course discusses the problem of measurement errors in survey. It will show the consequences of the errors in the results of the research. It will also be shown how large the differences are in results assuming perfect measurement and taking into account the fact that there are measurement errors. This requires, of course, that we are able to estimate or predict the quality of survey questions. In this course two approaches will be discussed. The first is the estimation of the reliability and validity of questions using multitrait-multimethod matrix (MTMM) experiments. The second is the prediction of the reliability and validity of questions using the program SQP 2.0.
It will be shown how this information can be used for improvement of questions before they are used in the field and for the correction for measurement errors in the analysis of the relationships between variables.
Short Bios of Trainers:
Melanie Revilla is a postdoctoral researcher at the Research and Expertise Centre for Survey Methodology (RECSM) and an associate professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF, Barcelona, Spain). She received her PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2012, in the areas of statistics and survey methodology. Her dissertation dealt with the effects of different modes of data collection on the quality of survey questions. She graduated in statistics and economics at the ‘Ecole nationale de la statistique et de l’administration économique’ (ENSAE-Paritech, Paris, France) and holds a Master of Science in Economics from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Spain). Besides the impact of the mode of data collection, she is interested in all aspects of survey methodology.
Diana Zavala represents RECSM-UPF at the Core Scientific Team and at the Translation Expert Task Group of the European Social Survey (ESS). She has participated in the design and evaluation of the questionnaire of the ESS Round 6. She is currently doing her Ph.D. on quality of survey data, analyzing the effects of minority languages in the reliability and validity of cross-cultural survey data. She is also working on a measurement instrument for political radicalism. Her research interests are survey methodology, MTMM experiments, structural equation modeling and questionnaire design. She is also interested in religious pluralism, identity politics and political radicalism.
