General Overview

There are two major types of inequalities that a country may face: social inequality and regional inequality. Both have far-reaching consequences for the country’s long-term economic growth and political stability. This talk is about the impact of regional economic segmentation within a country, and how it may impact financial development and asset valuation. Examples include several large multi-regional countries in the world, such as Russia, China, India, and the United States. Some discussion is focused on publicly available data from smaller countries such as Belarus and Armenia. Remedies for alleviating regional segmentation are also highlighted.
Part of Prof. Sarkissian’s presentation comes from his paper, “Market and Regional Segmentation and Risk Premia in the First Era of Financial Globalization” published in the Review of Financial Studies in 2018. The full paper can be found here.
